Director John Fulljames blogs about The Firework-Maker’s Daughter

The Firework Maker’s Daughter opened last night in Yorkshire with Opera North.

Having an audience for the first time is always an energising experience for the cast and creative team but it was particularly true yesterday. The feedback during the show – which included lots of laughter and a few tears – really helped bring the show to life. The show really relies on the audience feeling present and included in the storytelling – not only does the audience applause for Lila’s firework display determine whether or not Lila and Lalchand live or die – but throughout the show there is so much gained from an audience joining in the fun and spontaneity of the storytelling. They are learning the secrets of firework-making just as Lila is.

We worked like fireworkmakers in Hull all week and I am enormously grateful to the amazing technical team at Hull Truck Theatre who helped us create the show. The show is full of images – jungles, mountains, lakes as well as the odd firework – and we were all working up to the eleventh hour to make these effects as beautiful as possible. And our wonderful cast of singers and puppeteers gave a brilliant first performance despite a very intensive final week of rehearsals. Last night it felt like we have a show which, like Lila, is ready to go out into the world…

Composer David Bruce blogs about The Firework-Maker’s Daughter

Percussion has been at the forefront of my mind during the orchestral read-throughs. We have a lot of it in this piece! And there are so many variables to get exactly the sound you want. Just one drum could be played with about 20 different types of mallet, you could rest your hand on it to dampen the sound, play in the middle or the edge, loosen the drumskin or tighten it. These all make a huge difference and can completely change the atmosphere from, say “scary” to “jolly”. It’s also a logistical nightmare for the percussionists, and if you come to the show you will see them running back and too to get to that crucial timpani strike just in time, then rushing back again to get to the glockenspeil. It’s a little piece of theatre all to itself!

The Firework-Maker’s Daughter: Rehearsal Day One

by Zhen Wang

I was fortunate to watch a session during the initial rehearsals of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter. It was great to have a peek behind the scenes.

I enjoyed meeting the director – John Fulljames, the music director – Geoffrey Patterson, singers – counter-tenor James Laing and tenor Amar Muchhala and the puppeteers from Indefinite Articles. Even from the early rehearsals it is clear how well the performers are working together as a team. There were some superb performances – I was particularly impressed by the pure voice of James Laing and the resonant sound of Amar Muchhala.

I love the wonderful visual effects throughout the show and found the puppetry techniques fascinating. The story of the opera is a fairy-tale and has a number of anthropomorphic animal moments. The way that the puppetry can transform a singer into an animal is a very innovative stage effect.

I think this show is a great way to introduce children to opera. I can’t wait to see the whole piece performed in the spring.

John Fulljames on The Firework-Maker’s Daughter

Rehearsals for The Firework-Maker’s Daughter got off to a cracking start yesterday. The cast were joined by the puppeteers, creative team and representatives from the four co-producers. Great to have so many people involved. Director John Fulljames talked through his ideas, including how he is going to create the magical firework displays at the end of the show. Audiences will have to come and see it to find out!

Here is a short interview with John Fulljames talking about the piece.
