May - July 2006
Coproduced by The Opera Group, Haymarket Basingstoke and ROH2
Music by Dmitri Shostakovich
Words by Yevgeni Zamyatin, Georgi Ionin, Alexander Preis and Dmitri Shostakovich, based on the short story by Nikolai Gogol
Kovalyov wakes up one morning with no nose… It has taken on a life of its own and has gone for a stroll around the city.
One of the great satires in Russian literature is transformed into the most daring of modern operas; an electrifying tour de force of vocal acrobatics, wild instrumental colours and theatrical absurdity, all shot through with a blistering mixture of laughter and rage. The result is like an operatic version of Charlie Chaplin or Monty Python.
An orchestra of fifteen players and an ensemble cast taking more than sixty roles recreate the extraordinary adventure of Shostakovich’s youthful masterpiece.
2006 production created in collaboration with Haymarket Basingstoke and ROH2 at the Royal Opera House.
...brilliantly inventive, full of fantastical touches… it’s incredibly rare to see ensemble work of this level in theatre, let alone opera with virtuoso singing included…
