Customers visiting Selfridges in September were likely to be stopped in their tracks by a sudden intensity of live, pitch-perfect opera performed, guerilla-style, in various departments of the London and Manchester stores. The two specially-commissioned pieces, performed under the umbrella-title The Singing Shop, complemented Edward Rushton’s opera The Shops, which toured to both London and Manchester in September/October.

The Singing Shop was developed by The Opera Group with the support of the OperaGenesis project at the Royal Opera House. Selfridges and The Opera Group received investment from Arts & Business to develop their creative partnership. The A&B Investment Programme is funded by Arts Council England, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Scottish Executive.

Directed by John Fulljames
Singers: Frances Bourne, Carolyn Dobbin & Alexander Grove
